I biked home through intense crazy thunderstorms a couple of nights ago. I was on the edge of it, so the rain was more of a mist. There were ground-to-cloud lightning strikes in front of me hitting the buildings and the bridge. Part of me was awestruck at the crazy forks of incredible electricity everywhere but mostly the lizard part of my brain was screaming, 'get the fuck inside'.

Just called in to my first staff meeting at the new job. I haven't taken it yet but I seem to be getting sucked in. There was a debate about increasing funding for early detection and treatment of cancer in Africa. A topic near to my heart and it felt like the right place to be right now.

Related: Just back from a week in DC and it was surprisingly great. Traumatizingly expensive. BT came for the weekend and we really had fun. There were museums and sculpture gardens and oysters and cocktails and a fancy dinner and lots of great bike rides. Which is to say: my kind of weekend. No questions were asked or answered in this horrible slow car crash of a probable-breakup-but-maybe-we-figure-it-out-and-live-happily-ever-after.

I am generally feeling kind of bad at life, but also kind of calm about it. In the meantime, some things I am grateful for:
1. these daily thunderstorms are incredible, we are so small in the world.
and
2. my family is the very very best and I am so lucky because i will always have them and it's all going to be okay .
and
3. beautiful red and pink flowers on the trees across from my house in the early morning light.
