ugh, there is so much violence all around us right now in this city. Last weekend I heard at least a minute, maybe two minutes worth of gunshots as I walked home from the grocery co-op on the corner at 7pm. My friend, visiting from Canada, thought it was fireworks, but after almost 10 years here I can finally tell the difference. A minute or two after the shots were fired, sirens started wailing, and didn't stop for an hour. 17 people shot, all just congregated at a park following a parade. All week, there have been reports of armed robberies, I think 10 in 24 hours, as well as your standard carjackings and shootings. An hour ago, shots fired and someone killed on a corner one block from my office. At 5:30pm on one of the busiest streets in town, at rush hour. I bike through there at least twice a day, every day.
Enough. It feels like a net closing in. Nearly 150 people murdered already this year, with a population of less than 400,000. For comparison, Toronto has had less than 50 murders so far this year with a population of 2.6 million. Ugh. Love this city, but I'm tired of looking over my shoulder.
