home. a friend is subletting the front room and she picked me up, which was nice of her. It was a relief to have a smiling, familiar face at the airport after an epic journey that involved being stranded in DC overnight (which felt a bit like being in Ethiopia. Is everyone at Dulles airport Ethiopian or was that just me?). I've only been gone 7 weeks, but when I got here i felt so disoriented. Or 'disconnected' may be a better term. I feared the worst, and was prepared to spend my first hour at home re-installing the air conditioner BT helped me take out in april when it became clear i could have a window unit AC or a window that opened. Is is hot here, but it's not TOO hot. Not the heavy, relentless heat i remember, when any movement feels like wading through soup. When just the thought of moving induces a sort of soul-sucking ennui.

It just started raining. Big fat drops, and the cool air is coming through my open window and i think i'm going to try to make it through the summer without the AC. Brave words. It's my first afternoon. Let's see how it feels if I actually try to do anything.

strange, i was so immersed in canada that i nearly forgot new orleans existed. And now I'm here in my room and it feels like neither montreal nor new orleans exists. Only this room.

Normally i would go out for beers with my roommates or friends, but all my speed dials have moved or fled the summer. I will be spending a lot of time with my kindle this summer. And working.
