my new travel slogan: "i'll have dinner with anyone"

this week it led to a kind of fascinating meal with a friend of a friend who is 6 months older than me and has a Serious Job in Finance. As in: she flies all over Africa building companies. Or financial systems, or investments, or something. I wouldn't get it anyway, so I didn't even ask. I also learned that her boyfriend lives in San Fransisco and they see each other every other weekend. They meet in Europe or in Asia: anywhere accessible by a direct flight for him. Oh, and he has 30 million in the bank. I said, in a small voice, "i haven't seen my boyfriend since August"

as I wrote to my sister, life is weird.
there are people who think that my relationship with B involves a ridiculous amount of travel.

i have found that this motto of "i'll have dinner with anyone" inevitably leads to more dinners with anyone. this is good. i need more anyone in my life.

speaking of weird: strange events this week with a (former) friend/co-worker who stopped talking to me in june, but has come back into town and called all our mutual friends and essentially demanded that they choose between us. What? Her husband actually used the word "betrayal" and i thought, "40-going-on-11"?

At first I felt guilty and sorry that things went down so badly, and thought I must have done something pretty heinous to deserve this drama. But as they've ramped up their smear campaign I've decided they must be crazy, because I sort of flaked on a project but that's about it, and that is just not worth this level of vendetta.
Crazy is good, because I don't have to invest any more energy in trying to make it better.

I have never been more grateful for my policy of taking the high road in these situations. I even sent her a text asking if she wanted to meet to talk (which she ignored). I've stayed out of it, mostly I don't have to think about it, and there is the added benefit that they look SO BAD.
