Back home after a whole month in Ontario, including two whole weeks off, and my brain keeps skittering all over the place, unable to settle into sitting down at a desk to work. I'll probably be ok with it eventually but right now I just do.not.want.to.

Denise is visiting from Halifax and it's such a pleasure to have her just walk in the door - there she is on my couch with her smiling face, something that used to be normal when she lived down the street in Montreal. Alas. I never have gotten used to living this life where I don't have friends just stopping by for tea or a beer without planning it days in advance and having to trek across the city/country. It always feels like I am just waiting to make some new friends and that will be my life again... will I ever accept that life just won't ever exist like that again for me? Maybe in retirement.

Denise and I went for Ethiopian dinner and then to see Built to Spill last night and they SHREDDED and i loved it. Walked home afterwards in the perfect late-summer warm evening, up the long hill to Petworth, hoping to not be mugged, and we weren't! so that went well. For some reason everyone is touring right now so we have a few more shows planned this week and then some AI thing wjth J at the Kennedy Centre and maybe a dinner with Laura when she gets back later in the week. These are all DC things and they make me happy to be here even if i can't quite call it home.
