I'm back in DC for a couple of weeks before I head to S. Africa. My good friend is visiting from Nola and we meet in the evenings. When i leave work i think, "omg now i have to go be social?" but when I get there i'm mostly happy I made the effort. Last night we got dinner at a place I took BT to last June when i really thought he might move here (ha!). I looked online for the best burger joint in the city and took him there, but of course it didn't make BT suddenly decide to move to what is, in his mind, the 7th circle of hell. Still, I filed the place away for future reference and took my buddy there last night. He told me about his visit to the newish African American museum (report: very well done. Mostly African Americans visiting. Super long lines to get in. Online commentary mainly positive except for someone who claims "they hate white people". My friend found that hilarious). I discovered a new cocktail - bourbon, champagne, blackberry. So fancy and pretty. Also. BAM. I had one and was a bit wobbly, which was not a bad thing.
I need to majorly tune up my bike (I live at the top of the hill and brakes are essential) so for now I'm mostly walking or on the bus. I took a lyft to work today because it's Saturday and i needed to get here as soon as possible lest I remember that it's the weekend. The driver was from Nairobi and we had a good chat. I was there for a few weeks, about five or six years ago. I don't take taxis/lyft too often, but when i do one of my favourite things is talking to the drivers. Did you know that some people get into a taxi and ask the driver to change the radio station? That appalls me. Turn it down, okay. But if you don't like the music? It's not your car. Suck it up.
Speaking of music: alternating between the newest albums by LCD Soundsystem, Lana Del Ray, and Broken Social Scene. Feels good to have a rotating playlist again.. lately I forget about music, which has never ever happened before. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I also have mostly stopped cooking. It doesn't seem worth it for just me, and I'm hardly home for long enough to make it worth the effort. Also I have all these magazines and weekly newspapers piled up, unread, because I get all my news from Twitter. I think i'm trying to say that i'm turning into a very typical DC resident with my fancy cocktails and my lyft to work on a saturday and my social media and my takeout. Ugh.
