Today i had a flat and was supposed to speak at a class, so i called a cab. I hardly ever cab anywhere, because watching the meter steadily rising makes me so crazy. But today was an emergency, so i did it, and the whole way to school, i chatted with the nicest cab driver just about random things - the weather, what i'm studying - and then when i tried to tip him he wouldn't take my tip, and in fact gave me a discount on the cab ride because, he said, "you need it more than i do". I tried to refuse but he was so insistent that I just said thank you and took it as a sign that people still do nice things for strangers just because they can.
