today i was up at the undergrad campus and every 10 feet throughout the main area was an obnoxious pro-life message written in chalk on the sidewalk.
I guess being Canadian I thought it was out of line. Even after 9 years in the South, I'm not used to public proclamations on things that I think should be private decisions and I just can't imagine that flying on a campus at home, but then I really don't know what the rules are on these things. Anyway, it made me cranky (i'm real cranky these days) and I called student affairs to complain. I don't know what I thought they'd say. I probably deserved the lecture I received on "1st amendment rights" from the 20-year-old who answered the phone. Later I saw a bunch of grrls systematically smearing every chalk drawing with paper cups of water from the cafeteria, diligently scuffing the messages with their vans and loudly proclaiming their disgust with the chalk messages. So i'm officially an old crank, but the kids have it under control.
