i hauled myself into work by 6:30 this morning, trying to get some momentum on my own dissertation work instead of just dealing with other people's stuff all day long. It was nice and quiet in here and definitely a better start to being focused for the day, although it was kind of dispiriting to be leaving home in the dark. Also dispiriting: my manager. He's just kind of a jerk. But I need his money. More motivation to finish and move on in the world.

I found a nice-looking recipe for preserved lemons, and I'm going to go by the giant meyer lemon tree on the corner on my way home to try to grab some. The neighbour there never seems to mind me hoisting myself up on her fence [one day that house will change hands, and i will get shot.] At the very least, lemons in a jar will look cheerful and homey, and I will have created something other than tables this weekend.

On tuesday I went to a new york-based japanese ninja punk show, and all I could think was that the last time I saw them, in 2006, we all looked a lot younger. I'd like to say I danced as hard, but you know... I did not. This time I let the kids take the mosh pit in the middle, and I did a sort of nod and shuffle with my beer at the back. But at least I remembered to wear boots. The last time I went to a punk show I was so out of practice that I wore flipflops, and that was just silly.
