Biked home late last night along the train tracks that run goods to and from the freight docks on the Mississippi. For weeks now, open flat-bed trains have been carrying army vehicles - I think they're going from tankers on the river to the naval base. Sandy camo armoured cars, tanks, and trucks gliding along the tracks in a long, silent convoy.
They only run late at night when there's no one around, and the only sound is the occasional clashing and clanking of the trains. Last night was slightly foggy and in the lamplight it was an eerie, sobering sight. They must be bringing them back from Iraq? How could they have shipped so many vehicles over there? The scale is mind-boggling. I stood watching for a long time, thinking of riderless horses returning from war.
