today i watched the sun set from a terrace overlookin the ganges... one of the most sacred places in India.
A whole herd of schoolkids came out of nowhere in their chuddies as my father might say (underwear), dunked themselves in the freezing water, and took off back to wherever they came from.
Hundreds of pilgrims came to bathe in the water, or at least wade in and splash their faces with the sacred water. The placed bright orange flowers and lit candles on the river and I watched the tiny lights drift down the river into the deepening blue. It was one of the most peaceful sights of my life.
Flutes and chanting and drums floated across the water. A soft breeze rustled the flags on the temples.
And then..because this is India and nothing makes sense, the waiter turned on the lights surrounding the terrace. Hundreds of garish christmas tree lights. And worse! From somewhere droned a tinny version of "o christmas tree"
!?!?!?!?!
i could not find that box. I could not smash it. I just went on and on.
so i left.
