yesterday i went for dinner with my dad's cousin, and she pulled out this carefully preserved notecard that she'd brought down to show me.

Addressed to Imelda (my grandmother's sister), it read "thank you very much for your condolences on the death of my husband." It was signed "Jacqueline Kennedy."

I tried to imagine a world when someone from India would actually send a letter of condolence all the way to the White House. And to actually get a response! They must have shown it to everyone.
